Choosing The Right Sharpener
For You |
|
|
|
|
|
With so many options, it's hard to know which Sharpener is right for you.
Below we have broken down the sharpeners
based on usage, we hope this will help you make a better decision on
choosing the sharpener that best fits your needs. |
|
High Volume Sharpeners 1:
Most repair facilities, sharpening shops and retail stores that sharpen a
high volume of chains per day. The shop that needs all the bells and
whistles. All three models have an automatic clamping device and
commercial grade motor for quick and fast sharpenings. |
Summary: The
Tecomec Super Jolly and the Oregon 620-120 are both manufactured by
Tecomec in Italy. Part for part they are completely
interchangeable. The Maxx Model 13151 is manufactured by AMA
in Italy. The Maxx model 13151 is fairly new on the market,
and it may not be a proven product just yet, but dollar for dollar,
it's a tempting buy. The Tecomec and Oregon model run at a
higher RPM(3400) compared to the Maxx(2950) |

High Volume Sharpeners 2:
Most repair facilities, sharpening shops and retail stores that sharpen a
high volume of chains per day. The shop that needs a commercial grade
sharpener but doesnt mind clamping the chain manually. These models do
not have the hydraulic clamping device, but do have the same commercial
grade motor for quick and fast sharpenings. |
Summary: The Tecomec Jolly Star and the Oregon 520-120 are
both manufactured by Tecomec and made in Italy. Most of the parts are
interchangeable between these two models, but the Oregon 520-120 has a vise
slide feature that is not available on the Tecomec Jolly Star or the Franz
bench mount. The vise on the Oregon 520-120 slides front to back,
providing the additional 10 degrees for sharpening chisel chain.
However, both the Jolly Star and Oregon have a vise that pivots for
obtaining the 10 degrees for chisel chain, so you really do not gain
anything with the Oregon over the Tecomec. The slide feature on the
Oregon model is really just that, an extra feature that allows you to gain
the degrees through the slide or the pivot. |

High Volume Sharpeners 3:
These sharpeners are great for a startup business that wants a commercial
grade sharpener without all the fancy features and at a great price.
They are designed to sharpen a high volum of chains per day, but do not have
the larger open design, they are more compact and smaller, but not much. |
Summary: For whatever reason, most people tend to
shy away from these models. They are priced at an economy price,
but will do just about everything the
High Volume Sharpeners 1 and 2
will do. They have the same commercial motors that are used in
the above mentioned sharpeners, but they have a more compact design,
which reduces the cost in manufacturing. None of these models have a
sliding vise, but the Oregon 420-120 does have a pivoting vise in
obtaing the 10 degrees needed for full chisel chain.

Home owner or professional Wood Cutter:
These sharpeners are designed for the home owner or professional wood
cutter. Somebody who sharpeners chains on a frequent basis, but prefers a
more precise and faster sharpening than a hand file. Somebody who
sharpens chains weekly, rather than daily. |
Summary: The
Tecomec MIDI, Sharp Master and the Oregon 310-120 are all bench
mount economy models. While they are not commercial duty, they
will definitely get the job done quickly and precisely. |

Field Sharpening:
Sometimes we just need to touch-up or sharpen our chains in the field. |
Summary: Both
of these field sharpeners are quality made, but the Timberline is
more stable and much faster than your coventional Tecomec manual
sharpener. With the Timberline there is no binding or uneven
pressure on the cutter, the top slide on the Tecomec requires even
back and forth motion, any slight bend will cause friction in the
slide making it difficult to sharpen your chain. Hands down,
the Timberline manual sharpener will out perform the Tecomec, but
the Timberline is also far more expensive, but worth the price.
